Norma Ishak is an international fashion brand that focuses on knitwear. Rivington Design House was hired to re-brand Norma Ishak's printed materials, logo and web presence. We started with the logo and created a sleek/ modern yet elegant mark while using an appropriately stark typeface. We started out by keeping the sewing needle from their original logo but decided that it was too literal and not forward thinking enough.

We then broke down the needle to its most integral role in Norma Ishak's products, the stitch. Without a stitch, there would be nothing to sell. After hand drawing the capital "N," we created the graphic emblem for Norma Ishak.

The "N" captures the movement of a swift stitch while being truly subtle and totally disguised as a "N." Without the stitch, there would be no clothing, it is a building block- the foundation of any textile - an elegant symbol of how something small is the most important part of somehthing big.

Depending on the circumstance, Norma Ishak will either totally rely on their type face, their mark, or one of several combos created for varying applications.

Website and printed materials will be posted soon.

We just discovered the amazing art of Nickel carving. These nickels are called Hobo Nickels and were popularized in the early 20th century. Here's some more info regarding Hobo Nickels.

"The sudden scarcity of jobs in the early 1930s forced a huge number of men to hit the road. Certainly some coins were carved to fill the idle hours. More importantly, a ‘knight of the road,’ with no regular source of income, could take one of these plentiful coins and turn it into a folk art piece, which could in turn be sold or traded for small favors such as a meal or shelter for a night.

The nickel was an ideal coin from which to fashion such a token. The large profile of the Indian on one side and the classic image of the very wide American bison that complemented it on the reverse side provided an adequately sized canvas for the wandering hobo artist to use. It was portable, and the nickel (a copper-nickel alloy) is the hardest U.S. coin in circulation, ideal for carving.
hobo nickels

In a community of generally anonymous drifters, two carvers rose to prominence among hobo nickel creators. Bertram ‘Bert’ Wiegand was born in 1880 and carved from 1913 to 1949. He signed his coins by removing L I and Y from L I B E R T Y, leaving only B E R T. He tutored the man coin collectors consider the giant of hobo nickel carving: George Washington ‘Bo’ Hughes (born between 1895 and 1900 in Theo, Mississippi). Bert met the young teenager in a jungle, or hobo camp, along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad line, and Bo’s first nickels appeared two years later, in 1915. Bo carved till about 1980, when he was last seen by his friend of 40 years, Williard Chisolm, in a Florida camp.

Life as a hobo took its toll: the rigorous manual labor Bo undertook to survive during the money-tight, poverty-ridden 30s rendered his hands stiff and permanently damaged. Frequent beatings by ruthless detectives prowling railroads (where many hobos resided) in search of freeloaders and thieves compounded his dexterity impairment.

Nevertheless, devoted to his craft, Bo worked through the pain and frustrating impediments throughout the 1940s and into the 1950s, but in 1957, while he was working on a nickel, his chisel suddenly slipped and struck his hand. The injury forced the once-great hobo nickel engraver to resort to a haphazard punching method. Bo continued his work, but with less frequency and diminished quality, and as America moved into the post-war era genuine hobo nickels became a thing of the past.

The U.S. Mint ceased striking Buffalo nickels in 1938. - appalachianhistory.net

Rivington Design House was commissioned by Heather Andersen of Home Pilates to develop their new company's, New York Pilates, logo, branding materials and website for their 1st New York City Pilates studio. Where Home Pilates focused on teaching Pilates in client's homes, New York Pilates focuses on studio Pilates sessions. In creating their logo, we retained the key branding elements of the Home Pilates circle, colors, the "Stretch It" motto and the classic, gothic, sans-serif font.

We incorporated an additional script typeface for the words "NYC" which has replaced Home Pilates signature "H." The "NYC" embodies New York Pilates' sportier side while the clean, minimal, text around the circle signifies the companies dedication to design and fashion forward style and aesthetic in an industry that typically ignores such values.

New York Pilates branding strategy is to stress the fun, and superficial benefits of Pilates and working out. The undertone is that of physical therapy, body awareness, posture, and form.

Check out these clever and fun portraits by Chacho and Lula. Here is a quote from the artist.

"For a long time I´ve been wanting to do something with one of my sisters, my great-aunt and typography.
Not all together, but it just turned out that way.

As my son gets older and I get more grey hair, I wonder what kind of advice will I give to my grandkids.
My three grandmothers where always giving me sermons instead of tips. “Be carfeul with your money”. “Don´get invloved with that girl”, “Save”, “Get a haircut, you look like a hippie”, and all those classic parent, grandparent comments.

When you´re younger you think you´ll never fall into that same kind of discourse, until you find yourself talking about stupid (cliché) stuff with your kid, about how important school is and if you don´t have a degree you´re nobody. I hope I can give better advice some day. In the meantime, here are some tips my grandmother should have given me.

The photo is of my great-aunt. The photographer one of my sisters, Lula."- Chacho Puebla

Ron van der Ende is a sculptor living in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He specializes in wall mounted bas-reliefs constructed from found wood. The original color and texture of the wood is utilized to form a gripping and realistic mosaic. The realism is further enhanced by the perspective built into the relief. Van der Ende uses his method to conjure up dark industrial and space age imagery.
"Born and raised in the People's Republic of China, I grew up in an academic environment. Both my parents are retired art professors and my two sisters are also painters. When I was 15, my twin-sister and I won the National Competition to attend the high school attached to the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. From there, I began my professional art training.

Over the last twelve years, I have studied under both Chinese and American fine arts educational systems, and I believe I have discovered a balance between the two cultures and artistic styles. In China, I developed a solid foundation in painting, but the content was restricted. In 1996, I came to America to expand my education in fine arts. Graduate school in the US has provided me with the freedom to develop new concepts for my work. This unique experience has been recognized with a Skowhegan Artist Residency Scholarship (2003) and a Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship (2004) and Pollock Krasner Foundation grant (2006). I have exhibited my work nationally and internationally since 2000. I am now represented by Gallery Imperato in Baltimore.

I currently reside in Lawrence, Kansas with my husband John and daughter Rose. I plan to embark on a new project that is inspired by my Chinese heritage and my Kansas home." - HONG CHUN ZHANG

Rivington Design House was sought after by Tavleaux Vivants to design and develop/ overhaul their website. We crafted a design that gives the feeling of a factory, immersing the user in the designs and style of Tableaux Vivants. TV have collaborated with companies like VPL & Tron Legacy as well as been worn by Lady Gaga, etc.
